About

About

I’m David Berthiaume, founder and research engineer at Lixel.

Lixel is a small, focused practice built around four lanes: independent mathematics and computation research, technical consulting for hard problems in applied AI and scientific computing, advanced math and ML tutoring, and (in development) owned software and creative work.

Mission

Deep intellectual and artistic contribution. Integrity in the work and in how it’s done. Authentic thinking over fashion. Time and attention reserved for what’s meaningful: for the work itself and for the people I love.

Background

Master’s at Harvard, cross-registered at MIT. First-author publications and patents in mathematics and applied data science. Co-PI on a NASA scientific-computing project involving parallel codes on heterogeneous GPU clusters. Founded and sold a previous startup. Years of engineering and research work across applied ML, simulation, real-time systems, and graph algorithms. Built a 3D engine on the side. Have been coding since childhood.

What “Lixel” means

Light + pixel. The idea that clarity, agency, and meaningful structure can emerge from simple, well-understood fundamental pieces, whether that’s pixels building an image, agents building a society, or the small combinatorial blocks behind a proof.
